Sunil Gavaskar was bowled over by Rahul Tewatia’s free kick in the final leg of the Gujarat Titans vs Punjab Kings IPL 2022 match at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. Gavaskar called Tewatia an ‘ice man’ for keeping his cool and hitting Odean Smith for two consecutive sixes when 12 runs were needed from 2 balls to take Gujarat to a six-wicket win on Friday.
“What’s running through his veins? It’s not blood. Ice! You (Matthew Hayden) are right, Ice. Rahul Tewatia should be nicknamed Iceman,” Gavaskar said on the after show. -match on Star Sports.
Tewatia scored an unbeaten 13 on 3 balls which included two sixes on the last two balls when 12 were needed. Only MS Dhoni had achieved a similar feat in the IPL before. The legendary cricketer, then playing for Rising Pune Supergiant, crushed Axar Patel for six in a row in the final two balls to win the game for his side.

Gavaskar said only Tewatia could have got Gujarat Titans out of this situation.
“If there was anyone to bring Gujarat home it would be Tewatia. That was in his arc. He likes to come out of the stump and play that shot, we’ve seen him do that,” l former India captain said.
Gavaskar also added that PBKS bowling coach (Damien Wright) has a role to play in guiding young players like Odean Smith on how to play in tough situations.
“Young Odean Smith was under too much pressure. This is his first IPL. This is where the bowling coach has a big role to play. The bowling coach’s job is not just to correct wrist position and straighten their arm. The bowling coach is supposed to tell them. That’s what you need to play in those situations.
“As a bowler, Odean Smith can get hammered, but if the coach had said ‘try yelling here’, the captain is also there, but that’s where coaches make their money. If anything , the bowling coach has to stand up and take responsibility for what happened today,” Gavaskar said.
