Thousands of people running, cycling the streets today for the Long Beach Marathon • Long Beach Post News

A 13.1 mile half marathon and a 20 mile bike tour will be organized in conjunction with the marathon. The bike tour will take place on the marathon course, in reverse.

More than 6,000 runners have registered for the half marathon, said race publicist Dan Cruz. Runners can also run the marathon or half marathon virtually.

In total, about 10,000 runners signed up for Saturday’s Aquarium of the Pacific marathon, half-marathon, virtual races, bike tour or 5k race, Cruz said.

Runners from 44 states and 19 nations entered the races, with a 50/50 gender split and about 20% ran their first marathon or half marathon, Cruz said.

The 26-mile, 385-yard marathon course begins on Shoreline Drive. Runners will then pass through The Pike at Rainbow Harbor shopping and entertainment center, take an off-ramp to Highway 710, cross the Queensway Bridge to the bow of the Queen Mary.

The terrain will loop around the Rainbow Harbor Lighthouse, head towards Pierpoint Landing, then cross back through the start / finish area.

The sixth to 10th miles are run a few yards from the Pacific Ocean. The course then crosses the Belmont Shore district, passes the Marine Stadium, bypasses the Colorado Lagoon, passing by the Long Beach Recreation Golf Course.

The 16th to 20th miles is a 5 mile loop through Cal State Long Beach. The course then runs on Ocean Boulevard to the finish line on Shoreline Drive.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Health Order requires all race participants and participants to be fully vaccinated against the coronavirus or have a negative COVID-19 test result before attending the event .

All participants must present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result before they can collect their bibs.

The remaining physical infrastructure from the Acura Grand Prix at Long Beach last month prompted an earlier start to the half marathon to lighten the crowds of half marathon participants at the start of the race. The half marathon will start in waves from 7am with the competitive wave.

The waves will continue until 7:50 a.m.

Riders will only be able to access the start line preparation area at Marina Green via two pedestrian bridges due to the remaining physical infrastructure of the Long Beach Acura Grand Prix.

The coronavirus pandemic prompted organizers to hold the Running Health and Fitness exhibit outdoors.

The Long Beach Marathon was first held in 1982. The race was dissolved in 1996 due to financial problems, then relaunched in 1999 under new management.
