The Packers won the opening coin toss and elected to postpone. Green Bay used both a 3-4 and 4-3 base defense in the first downs of the series, bringing in Krys Barnes along with De’Vondre Campbell and Quay Walker.
The Packers had the Vikings in third-and-5, but Kirk Cousins maneuvered Minnesota with a 19-yard pass to Justin Jefferson in third-and-5 of the Vikings’ 40.
Adam Thielen was stopped one yard from first down on third-and-8 of 12, but Cousins knocked Jefferson offside for the 5-yard touchdown on fourth-and-1 to put Minnesota ahead 7-0 with 9 minutes, 17 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Packers started Yosh Nijman at left tackle and Royce Newman at right tackle with David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins both out. Second-round rookie pick Christian Watson started at receiver and beat Patrick Peterson off the line of scrimmage on his first NFL snap, but couldn’t hold off Aaron Rodgers’ through pass.
Aaron Jones landed a first down with a 10-yard run, but the Packers punted after a third and 6 passes to Romeo Doubs went incomplete.
Minnesota started at its own 15 after Pat O’Donnell’s 47-yard punt was caught by Jalen Raegor. Quay Walker got his third tackle of the game when he dropped KJ Osborn for a three-yard gain on second-and-10.
The Packers stayed in the nickel and forced the three-and-out after Rashan Gary fired Cousins. On the play, Gary lined up inside Preston Smith on the left side.
Green Bay, starting on their own 46, got the first down with a quick pass to Randall Cobb in third-and-4, but the Packers were forced to throw after Za’Darius Smith sacked Rodgers in third-and-8.
