SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – One person had died, two others hospitalized with injuries and a suspected hit-and-run driver was still at large on Friday morning after a horrific three-vehicle collision in San Jose.
“The suspect immediately fled on foot after the crash and a description is being worked out as detectives put the parts together,” Officer Steve Aponte said.

The impact of the crash caused the victim to be thrown onto the sidewalk from the Nissan he was in, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said a BMW was heading west on Santa Clara at 10th Street around 10:30 p.m. when it struck the Nissan – spinning it around in a storefront – then collided with another car that waited for the light to change.
The other two drivers who were injured are listed in stable condition.
“This is another heartbreaking fatality on our streets,” said Colin Heyne of the San Jose Department of Transportation, which is monitoring an increase in fatalities in San Jose this year.

“This brings us to 42 people who have sadly died on our streets this year,” Heyne said.
It is also the 12th fatal hit-and-run so far in 2021, compared to the nine fatal crashes recorded by the SJPD last year.
“It’s a very dangerous turn. This is the second accident this year, ”said Robin Hunt-Fitzhugh, owner of the Braid It Up salon, which was damaged when the Nissan was pushed through the windows.
Her security cameras don’t show the crash, but she asks San Jose to install cameras capable of recording the constant looping traffic at that intersection.
“It will force a lot of people to ignore the lights that are out there,” Hunt-Fitzhugh said. Police are asking the public for help in identifying the BMW driver, who now faces serious felony charges and jail time if arrested.
