R

Ronnie Rivers Fresno State Bulldogs

Advantages:

Cutting fast, Rivers uses lightning-fast jumps to change race lanes. Operates with a low center of gravity and cushion level, is able to ignore arm tackles at times. Very agile feet, stays well balanced and is able to stay within limits after touching the sidelines. Elusive in space, misses the first defender and is able to dodge big hits. Reads the flow well and the outer zone, is patient to cut the field. Let his blocks escape into space before speeding up and making his decision. Soft and reliable hands out of the backfield during checks. As a receiver, he can execute routes against LBs and create separation.

The inconvenients:

At 5-foot-8, 195 pounds, Rivers will be too short for a number of NFL ploys. Extremely heavy workload in Fresno, a little worrying for a guy with his height. He won’t be able to work regularly in tackles in the NFL. Going to have a hard time facing the LBs in the hole as a pass protector. Can stand in the hole, if he does not gain momentum on the descent.

Summary:

Ronnie Rivers was one of MWC’s top backs in recent years and finished first in a number of Fresno State record books. His small size is a concern, but he has good weight and plays bigger than his 5ft 8in frame. Rivers hollowed out the defenses with his outside zone and receiving ability. Getting the ball out into space is a must for this guy. Offensive coordinators will be able to get creative and find some offsets for this former Bulldog.

Fund:

Originally from Oakley, Calif., And attended Freedom High School. Graduated as a two-star rookie and was of interest only to Fresno State. Rivers was a finalist for Cal-Hi Sports’ Mr. Football State Player of the Year as a senior. Made seven starts in first year and had an immediate impact. Recorded 1,192 all-purpose yards and was named Las Vegas Bowl MVP in 2018. Second All-Mountain West Team in 2019. First Team All-Mountain West in 2020. Holds multiple running and landing records for Fresno State .

Right word:

“An underrated workaholic that will give NFL teams a great option for a change of pace.”
