The Haskell Stakes of $1 million on July 23
Let’s look at the road to August 6 in New Cumberland, home of the Mountaineer races.
This weekend, on July 23the $1 million in Haskell holdings comes from Monmouth Park, New Jersey. Here are some names punters know because of the road to spring Triple Crown circuit.
Taiba is confirmed to work and will bring much interest. He won the Santa Anita derby in only his second outing and was in a striking position to do well in the Kentucky Derby. But he flattened in the stretch, finishing 12th. He’s a stalker.
Taiba is formed by Bob Baffert, who has won the Haskell more than anyone. Baffert has erased recent suspension protocols by state commissions and is eligible to enter horses.
Jack Christopher is four for four on the campaign. He was scratched with a spring injury from the derby circuit but worked well. Jack Christopher is a speed horse that fits into the Monmouth Park track’s favorite fast-paced style of racing.
This race is 1 1/8 milesmore comfortable than the Kentucky Derby 1 1/4.
Florida derby winner white shelter and Arkansas derby winner Cyberknife should also run.
Kentucky Derby winner Mandaloon won the Haskell last year after the first winner hot rod Charly was disqualified. Check Wednesday’s draw to find the final field.
The $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes on July 30
Then on July 30the $600,000 Jim Dandy Challenges at Saratoga throws in his recall of the derby circuit.
Zandon and ethereal road are listed as likely to run. Do these names sound familiar to you?
Zandon finished third in the Kentucky Derby. He was trying to sink Epicenter and the Horses looked set to finish 1-2. Then clouds came 80-1 winner Rich Strike. It is a stalker and closer.
A day before the derby, Rich Strike was unregistered. He entered due to a late elimination by Ethereal Road.
Despite being scratched from the Run for the Roses, Ethereal Road works well at a lower level. Let’s see if he comes forward.
There is still some time for this field to be finalized. Watch for next week.
Early voting won the Precocity issues and is listed as probable. He has a head style that could allow him to take the lead early.
This too is shaping up to be an excellent race.
West Virginia Derby 2022
Who’s running in West Virginia on August 6? Early guesses include Skippy Longstockingwho ran a good third behind Mo Donegal and Nest in the Belmont Stakes.
Simplification completed Fourth in the Kentucky Derby and has been in the top three in most of his races.
The West Virginia Derby will be compelling enough for Mountain State bettors. A bonus is to bet on the Saratoga card, which includes the $1 Million Whitney Stakes and the Saratoga Derby.
Entrances familiar to racing fans will soon surface for the Whitney.
A Triple Crown thoroughbred that has already shocked the industry looks ready for the Saratoga Derby, which is on the grass. Classic pavement (remember his 11th place finish at the Kentucky Derby?) won the Belmont’s $1 Million Invitation in his debut on the grass.
This marks the second stage of what is considered the Turf Racing Triple Crown.
Mountain State horse racing bettors have one of the few luxuries in any state this time of year. There are live races every day.
Mountaineer hosts the programs Sunday-Wednesday at 7 p.m.. While Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races gets the ball back Thursday-Saturday at a time.
