DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – A 23-year-old man is in police custody after trying to flee from police after they arrested him on Wednesday.
Decatur Police Department Vice/Narcotics Unit investigators said they stopped a vehicle on 12th Avenue and West Moulton Street SW for a traffic violation.
They say that once the driver stopped, he got out of the car and started running.
Police say the man was grabbed and arrested a short distance from the vehicle. He was identified as Norberto Montalban-Nava of Decatur.
Authorities say Nava had methamphetamine, marijuana, THC vape pens, drug paraphernalia and a loaded firearm, as well as a felony warrant with the Madison Police Department.
Nava now faces multiple counts including attempted flight/escape, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of second degree marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, carrying a gun without licence, failure to signal and driving with suspension.
Police also said that once Nava was in their custody, a victim came forward to investigators and told them that Nava had stolen his cell phone. Investigators found that while running from them, Nava was able to steal the woman’s phone from the porch of a nearby house.
He was slapped with additional charges for third degree theft of property.
Nava was taken to Morgan County Jail and held on $4,800 bond.
