EASTERN PALESTINE – The Eastern Buckeye Conference Cross Country Championship is circled on everyone’s schedule.

The meet will feature some of the state’s top teams at Marlington High School on October 16.

“I think you have two teams that could compete for the state title in November,” Salem coach Ted Yuhaniak said of daughters Salem and Minerva.

Marlington is the boys’ favorite, but Salem, West Branch, Minerva and Canton South won’t be far either.

“We want to have a good performance at EBC”, said Salem senior Davin Koskinen, who won the Columbiana County title on Tuesday. “We’re going against one of the best teams in the state. Marlingtion is easily one of the best teams in Division I, II, and III. They are phenomenal.

The Girls’ Race promises to be a battle between Salem and Minerva.

“We hope to do good because there is good competition there. “ Salem freshman and county girls’ champion Maggie Hall said.

“If our girls show up and run well, they will take it” Koskinen said. “But Minerva is still showing up for the race. If I were a gambler, I would bet on our girls.

Sadly, this will be the last race of the season for Salem sophomore Megan Stafford, who finished third at the Columbiana County Meet on Tuesday.

Stafford will not be eligible to make the playoffs due to OHSAA transfer rules. She raced cross country for Minerva last fall before transferring to Salem.

“It’s disappointing that she doesn’t run away” Hall said.

It will be a golden opportunity for one of Salem’s other daughters to step in and help the Quakers get to the podium at the state meeting.

“There are girls who intervene and we still have an opportunity to achieve our goals”, Hall said. “They definitely showed it in this race.”

Meeting Notes

• The Salem boys miss two of their top seven runners as Tim Stephens sits out for the season with a stress fracture and Andy Wilson is questionable with a hip injury.

“They are still a regional team with them,” Yuhaniak said.

• The county meeting looked more normal than last year during the coronavirus pandemic.

“This year it’s a fight” Koskinen said. “But this year is much better than last year because there were more restrictions last year.”

• Koskinen has only won two cross-country races and both were at East Palestine City Park during the county competition – as an eighth-grader in 2017 and as a senior in 2021.

• Salem rookie Maggie Hall won the girls’ race after her sister, Carly, won the county title in the past two seasons.

“I was trying to follow in his footsteps” said Maggie Hall.

Carly wasn’t up for the county meeting as she shows up at Youngstown State University and prepares for the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday.

• Heartland Christian’s top runner, Giovanni Citriglia, did not run due to illness.

• Leetonia’s sophomore Carlie Adkins was late for the start of the girls’ race. The rest of the peloton got a head start on her, even though she managed to overtake 10 riders.

• There were 49 boys and 43 girls runners in the high school races. Twenty-five of the 92 runners were from Salem. In 2016, there were 156 high school runners.

• It was the second time in seven years that Eastern Palestine had hosted the meeting.

The meeting had taken place the previous two years at the Ward Sports Complex in Columbiana. Last year, this was the only course available as parks in eastern Palestine and Salem were closed during the coronavirus pandemic. The county meeting is scheduled to be held at Waterworth Memorial Park in Salem next year.

• Eight of the county’s teams will be at the Clipper Invitational on Saturday, although Salem is only sending junior varsity runners. Chances are, the Quakers will still have a good race.
