Chiefs rookie running back Isiah Pacheco to start against 49ers

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports on a reshuffle in the Kansas City Chiefs’ backfield. Rookie running back Isiah Pacheco is expected to start on fellow RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The NFL insider said the seventh round got all of the first-team reps this week in practice. The rookie has been shining since training camp and at the start of the season. Although Pacheco didn’t have many chances, he runs hard when he touches the ball. With Kansas City struggling to move the ball effectively, it seems Andy Reid and the rest of the coaching staff felt it was time for a change. “Pacheco will replace former first-rounder Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who will always have a key role on offense. Kansas City often turns back, and both should see some big shots,” Rapoport said. Pacheco is averaging 4.8 yards per carry to Edwards-Helaire’s 4.3 ypc. Rutgers’ withdrawal is Reid’s only seventh-round offensive selection to be on the team’s active roster at the start of the season. Shortly before the 2022 NFL Draft, general manager Brett Veach said he believed there was a 1,000-yard rusher available in the final rounds. The team seems willing to give Pacheco a chance to prove Veach right. The Chiefs backfield will also get a touch from RB Jerick McKinnon in relief of Edwards-Helaire and Pacheco.
