This year, resolve to explore Wisconsin’s outer beauty, one step at a time. There are thousands of miles of hiking trails to explore in Wisconsin and they take hikers to incredible views of cliffs, through ancient and wild forests, and down to the shores of clear glacial lakes. The trails await: here are 12 you should hike this year.
In these uncertain times, keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket-to-visit list at a later date.
1. Balanced rock trail
Devils Lake, Wisconsin, United States
The trails at Devil’s Lake State Park attract a large number of hikers for a reason – they are spectacular. Travel the hilly, balanced rocky trail to see a rock formation that looks like it doesn’t have to exist. It does – prepare to be surprised.
2. Eagle trail
Peninsula State Park, 9462 Shore Rd, Fish Creek, WI 54212, USA
Door County Peninsula State Park has magnificent towering cliffs and wild lake shores and Eagle Trail will help you take in the beauty. Be prepared to do a bit of scrambling, but the effort is worth it.
3. Myers Beach Sea Caves Trail
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, 415 Washington Ave, Bayfield, WI 54814, USA
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Lake Superior is a great kayaking destination, but you can explore sea caves without getting wet. Just hike the Myers Beach Sea Cave Trail.
4. Lime Kiln Trail
South of Appleton, in High Cliff State Park, a mining operation once flourished. The rock quarry has been abandoned for years, but this scenic trail will take you past the old lime kilns.
5. Path of the sacred hill
Holy Hill – Basilica and National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians, 1525 Carmel Rd, Hubertus, WI 53033, USA
One of the most photographed places in Wisconsin is Holy Hill Basilica and the National Shrine of Mary. The Basilica is perched on top of a massive hill and this trail will loop you around the resort.
6. Glen de Parfrey Trail
Parfrey’s Glen State Natural Area, 1377 County Rd DL, Merrimac, WI 53561, USA
Not far from Devils’ Lake State Park is a natural area in Merrimack which has a lush gorge hiding a delicate waterfall. Bring your camera!
7. Lost Creek Falls

If you love to see waterfalls, you’ll love Lost Creek Falls in Cornucopia. It’s beautiful in any season and you can even walk behind the falls!
8. Cave Point Lakeside Trail
Cave Point County Park, 5360 Schauer Rd, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235, USA
One of the most popular places for visitors to Door County is Cave Point County Park. The Lakeside Trail will give you great views of the picturesque caves in the park.
9. Lake Geneva trail
Lac LÃ©man, WI 53147, USA
For more than a century, Lake Geneva has attracted holidaymakers in search of relaxation. A path goes all around the lake and will take you past historic lakeside homes.
10. Manitou Falls Trail
Big Manitou Falls, Superior, WI 54880, USA
Near Superior, this Pattison State Park trail is a perfect hike for a day in the waterfall. The view of the falls and gorges will take your breath away.
11. Lion’s Lair Trail
Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Reserve, 511 High Bluff Dr, Grafton, WI 53024, USA
You can find wonderful lake views without making it all the way to Door County. Just head to Grafton and hike this trail that runs along Lake Michigan.
12. Blue Spring Lake Trail
The 1,200 Mile Ice Age Trail is one of the best hiking trails in the country, but if you just want to explore part of the trail it can be a little tricky knowing where to start. A good bet is the Blue Spring Lake Trail near Palmyra. It will take you through a magnificent strip of glacial terrain.
